Fixing Dental Problems for Sacramento Residents

March 29, 2014Dr. Stefanie ShoreDental Health

Whether it is a toothache, cracked tooth, bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity, or a dental issue you don’t think is serious, fixing dental problems should be your top priority. It is important for Sacramento residents to correct oral health problems as early as possible not only to avoid more costly dental procedures in the future and to help maintain oral health and overall health.

A few statistics convey the importance of paying attention to dental problems. Children in our California community are at a very high risk for gum disease, with over 50 percent of kindergartners having tooth decay. That number rises to 70 percent by third grade, according to First 5 Sacramento Commission. Adults are also at risk, as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that about 1/3 of all adults in the U.S. have tooth decay.

For these reasons, now is the time to start asking the question: where are the best dentists near me and when should I make an appointment?  Here are some of the top reasons to fix your dental problems in Sacramento.

Reduces excessive dental work.  Dentists want to have your dental issues repaired early not just for your oral and overall health, but because it helps you reduce the need for excessive work in the future. The longer you put off needed dental work, the worse the issue becomes. Early on, a filling may be all you need. Without treatment you may need a root canal and crown, which will cost a lot more time and money.

If your child has a slight overbite or misplacement of their teeth, you can correct it with orthodontic treatment and avoid more expensive procedures later to restore their smile. You save money, time, and discomfort by getting dental issues treated right away.

Improves your smile. By getting important dental procedures done, you decrease the risk of losing your teeth due to severe infection or tooth decay. Most of our patients desire to keep their natural teeth as long as possible and having dental problems addressed early helps them to do that.

Relieves chronic pain. Many people with chronic pain in the jaw or teeth have pain because they did not see their local dental practice soon enough or often enough. You can relieve and prevent severe chronic pain and discomfort simply by resolving dental problems as they arise instead of procrastinating until it becomes a larger issue.

Prevents serious medical conditions. Finally, getting your dental problems fixed can prevent more serious health or medical complications. Your dental health has an effect on your overall health, leading to conditions like heart disease or diabetes.

Warning and Risk Factors of Dental Issues

Some warning signs of periodontal disease include:

  • having bad breath
  • a bad taste in your mouth
  • bleeding or swollen gums

Risk factors, such as diabetes, smoking, poor oral hygiene, heredity, stress, and crooked teeth all increase the likelihood of getting periodontal disease which can lead to these other medical issues.

Aside from fixing dental problems and practicing good oral hygiene, you should also be aware of junk foods that worsen your oral health. As recently reported in the Sacramento Bee, sticky foods, sugary foods and snacks, sippy cups, drinking from a bottle, and acidic foods and drinks all increase you and your family’s risk for dental problems and decay. Avoid these foods, brush twice a day, and visit your Sacramento dentist Dr. Stefanie Shore twice a year for check-ups to improve your oral health.
